Cinelli was founded in 1948 by Cino Cinelli (born Montespertoli, Italy, 9 February 1916, died 20 April 2001), a former professional road racer and president of the Italian Cyclists’ Association. He was a professional racer from 1937 to 1944, winning Milano-San Remo in 1943, the Giro di Lombardia in 1938, and the Giro dell Appenino in 1937.
Failure to interested manufacturers with his ideas in 1948 led him to start his own company. His brother Giotto was making steel stems and bars in Florence and Cinelli moved the business to Milan, the centre of the Italian cycling industry. He made stems, bars and frames also for other companies. Someone may remember him as a rider, many others remember him as the father the first aluminium handlebars, the first seat with a plastic core, the first pedal straps, the first quick release pedals.
The Modello B is known as the ‘little brother’ of the Modello S.C., still one of the most one of the most elegant and competitive bikes available in early 1960s. The elegance and performance of the Modello B are legendary. Viktor Kapitonov’s victory on road race of 1960 Olympic Games on a Model B is unforgettable. Still today, the collectors around the globe are trying to get hold of good pieces.
