GITANE Aero Profil TT, Shimano Dura Ace AX, 57.5cm (1980) – SOLD

Cycles Gitane was founded by Marcel Bruneliere in 1925 in Machecoul, France. Gitane became famous in the late 1950s when Jacques Anquetil took three of his five victories in the Tour de France on Gitane bikes. Gitane was connected to legendary cyclings super heroes Jacques Anquetil, Lucien VanImpe,  Bernard Hinault, Laurent Fignon and Greg LeMond winning a total of 12 Tour de Frances.

During the company heyday in the 1970s and 1980s Gitane created some of the most technologically advanced aerodynamic time-trial bikes the world had ever seen.

At the 1981 Tour de France, Hinault took an early lead by winning the prologue, on his Gitane Profil TT Aero  then relinquished the yellow jersey. On the time trial to Pau on stage seven, he regained the lead and did not lose the jersey until Paris, beating Van Impe by almost a quarter of an hour. He won five stages, including all four individual time trialsAmidst media criticism that he was riding too defensively in the mountains, he also took victory in the Alps on a stage to Le Pleynet.

B.Hinault won prologue at the Tour de France 1981

Here we are proudly offering one of the most advanced aerodynamic steel racing bikes of its time – GITANE Aero Profil which dates back to 1980. Very similar bike was ridden by B.Hinault to win several time trials at the Tour de France in 1981. Superb frame is made of Reynolds aero fillet brazed tubing, shinning in original paint, built with Shimano Dura Ace Ax groupset, Mavic SSC rims with 24 spokes and special Mavic hubs with narrower front hub for aero approach. A work of art.

Museum piece.
