Ernesto Colnago was born on February 9, 1932 in Cambiago, near Milan, Italy. At age 13 he entered in world of two wheels and immediately he fall in love with bikes and cycling. In 1952 he founded Colnago and started to work as mechanic for several professional teams. His first big success as a frame builder dates back in 1960 when Luigi Arienti won gold medal at the Rome Olympic games. Colnago’s bikes still have a domination of the world’s cycling sports because Ernesto was always an innovator and pioneer of new technologies which supposedly provide more efficency or comfort.
Colnago Super is for sure one of the most succesful racing bikes in history. It was released in 1968, produced for more than 20 years, was Colnago’s top model of late 1960 and 1970s and became a legend with Eddy Merckx ridding for Molteni Team. The Super was designed for professionals riders and thanks to Columbus SL tubing it was a synonym for stiffness and lightnes.
Eddy Merckx ”The Cannibal” was born on June 17 1945 and was a professional cyclist from 1961 to 1978. Cycling fans consider him to be the most successful cyclist in history, with 525 victories to his name. He won the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia five time each, has won all of the top events except for the Paris-Tours, has won the Vuelta a España, has won the World championship as both a professional and as an amateur, and has broken the world hour record. The Cannibal joined at the end of 1970, having twice won the Tour de France and two editions of the Giro di Italia. In years 1971-72 Merckx rode Colnago bikes, in 1973 he officially moved to DeRosa.
Proudly presenting another iconic Italian racing machine, the COLNAGO Super shinning in famous Molteni Team paintjob. The frame is work of art and was the reference by which other steel frames were judged back in early 1970s. It’s made of Columbus SL tubing and dates back to 1972-73. All original build with Campagnolo Nuovo Record groupset (PAT.72 rear deraileur, no PAT on the 172,5mm cranks) and extraordinary parts like pantograph Cinelli cockpit, Cinelli Unicanitor saddle and Martano rims. The frame was made for professional rider and is marked with F.P. at the rear drop-out and forks. We are still waiting for confirmation about the name of the rider. Additionally, we can provide vintage Merino wool Molteni cycling kit and handmade leather shoes.
