Colnago C40 MAPEI – SOLD

In 1994 Colnago started to produce their very successful model C40 — ‘C’ for carbon and ‘40’ to commemorate Colnago’s 40th year in business. Full carbon frame with Master profile carbon tubes bonded to carbon lugs.

Ernesto Colnago solved the problem of how to make a carbon frame durable enough to win the toughest cobbled Classics yet light enough to soar up Alpine cols. That’s the reason why the C40 is the favourite bike of all time for so many people — including Sir Bradley Wiggins. Colnago could have created something with perhaps a swoopy, futuristic profile befitting its revolutionary design. Instead he kept the tubes ramrod-straight in the traditional style — albeit with the star-shaped cross-section that he had pioneered with the steel Master.

”When we built the C40, we were the only ones to build carbon frames and all the mechanics and competitor technicians were saying that they would be too dangerous to use on cobbled roads, especially with the straight carbon forks. There was a company that wanted to fit suspension forks on the bicycle, but I wasn’t going to have suspension forks on the C40. The night before Paris- Roubaix I had Mr. Squinzi, the Mapei boss, on the phone to me raising his concerns about using such a delicate-looking thing. I told him that we’d done all of the tests that we could on the frame and the fork and we were certain there would be no problem. I had to take personal responsibility for what was going to happen and I spent all night worrying about it, barely able to sleep. But when I heard that there were 4 Mapei riders in the break, I knew I could relax.” The C40 went on to win 5 editions of Paris-Roubaix in 6 years.

We are offering one of the most wanted bikes ever, holly grail, Colnago C40 Mapei colors, Paris Roubaix setup. Same bike won Paris-Roubaix 5 times, by Franco Ballerini (’95 and ’98), Johan Museeuw (’96 and 2000) and Andrea Tafi (’99). An iconic Italian bicycle perfect to enrich any classic bicycle collection or just to enjoy a fast and comfortable ride.
