COMEPRE Titanio for PINARELLO, Campagnolo Super Record, 52.5cm (1978) – SOLD

In the 1960s, apart from a few large companies in the aeronautical sector, there were no companies in Italy capable of working and especially welding titanium, an innovative material that was beginning to be increasingly used and requested for its characteristics of resistance and lightness.

In the mid-1960s, engineer Carlo Chiti, general manager of Autodelta – Racing department of Alfa Romeo, imported some titanium tubes from the USA, with the project of creating a new racing car frame. He visited Manfredi who, with skill and dedication, developed the necessary welding process, creating the first titanium welding booths for race cars. The collaboration of Manfredi and Autodelta began, from which many of the titanium motorcycle frames were born with which Giacomo Agostini dominated the world championship.

COMEPRE was founded by Alessandro Manfredi in 1972, an expert welder, and led by him for many years. Manfredi set up his own business in a small workshop and built new high vacuum and controlled atmosphere welding booths with which he weld titanium components. But Manfredi’s economic means were limited and, at the suggestion of his mother, a former schoolmate of Enzo Ferrari, he turned to the latter in search of a financier.

Enzo Ferrari accepted his requests and so COMEPRE began collaborating with FERRARI for the construction of new formula 1 titanium chassis and also developed commercial relations with Autodelta.

At the same time as the spread of titanium, the market was expanded to other sports in late 1970s (also road cycling). Later in the 1980s, also to other sectors as Comepre specialized in the processing and welding for naval, pharmaceutical, military and oil & gas sectors.
