Ernesto Colnago was born on February 9, 1932 in Cambiago, near Milan, Italy. At age 13 he entered in world of two wheels and immediately he fall in love with bikes and cycling. In 1952 he founded Colnago and started to work as mechanic for several professional teams. His first big success as a frame builder dates back in 1960 when Luigi Arienti won gold medal at the Rome Olympic games. Colnago’s bikes still have a domination of the world’s cycling sports because Ernesto was always an innovator and pioneer of new technologies which supposedly provide more efficency or comfort.
The Colnago Mexico was released to celebrate Eddy Merckx’s world hour record that took place in Mexico City back in 1972. The Cannibal had ridden lightweight Colnago bike (5.75 kg) and with impressive distance 49.431 km in 1h, the record stood for 12 years. The Mexico is very similar to Super, sometimes it’s s difficult to distinguish between the those two. The only major difference is the slightly thinner 4/10 Columbus SL tubes with inner reinforcements. The Mexico was designed for professionals riders and thanks to Columbus KL tubing it was a synonym for stiffness and lightness.
Almost identical golden Colnago Mexico Oro bike was donated to Pope John Paul II as a gift by Ernesto Colnago in 1978.
